Environmental Sustainability Report 2009
Since its purchase in May 1998, we have developed Canberra Airport from its dilapidated state into a vibrant, sustainable transport hub worthy of its role as the Airport servicing the nation's capital.
In those ten or so years, we have also become painfully aware of the fragile state of our environment and equally the responsibility that the aviation industry and the built environment must accept in its contribution to environmental degradation.
Managing environmental impacts is an evolutionary process involving the testing and trialing of projects to arrive at the best possible outcome for protecting and enhancing the environment. Since May 1998, we have been committed to a program of continuous improvement and excellence. This has ranged from the design of our buildings, the materials and components we use, the expectations we have of our contractors, consultants and our own team and the ongoing servicing and maintenance of our developments to ensure absolute tenant satisfaction.
We are leaders in our industry, and can claim many firsts to that end. The first 5 Star building in Australia (8 Brindabella Circuit); Australia's largest on-site gas tri-generation plant, the first commercial large scale water recycling system in the ACT and indeed at an Australian Airport and zero reliance on the ACT's potable water supply for our external environment.
Building green will always be an evolving process and we are absolutely focused on sourcing and devising innovative ways to reduce our environmental impact. Our largest and most ambitious project to date – our new Multi-User Airport Terminal - will be the culmination of all we have learnt, capitalising on what has worked in the past as well as bringing new ideas to the table.
