Save our suburbs - stop aircraft noise

Former NSW Planning Minister, the Hon Frank Sartor, ignored clear advice from his own Independent Panel of Inquiry, aviation experts, the Commonwealth and ACT Governments, Federal Labor, the airlines, and Canberra Airport, and approved a Residential and Economic Strategy for Queanbeyan which includes thousands of homes under Canberra Airport's flight paths.

This Strategy, supported by the Queanbeyan City Council and Tralee developer The Village Building Company, commences a process that, if continued unaltered to its conclusion, will see homes built at Tralee and Environa under the arrival and departure flight paths from Canberra Airport.

The result is inevitable. The developers will be long gone but residents will complain about the noise and seek to obtain respite. They will seek a curfew on the airport, to the economic detriment of the region, but more critically, they will seek to have the noise shared across Canberra, Queanbeyan and the region. And of course in a seat where a few hundred votes can change the sitting member and potentially the Government, politicians WILL listen.

The proposed homes at Tralee are not needed. A draft Report by planning consultants Parsons Brinkerhoff, commissioned by Canberra Airport following a request by Minister Sartor, demonstrates that well in excess of 25 years of residential land supply for Queanbeyan is available at Googong and surrounding locations in areas that are not impacted by aircraft noise. Building homes away from flight paths will avoid the need to share noise over existing residents.

If you value your livelihood and wish to see your home protected from aircraft noise disturbance, please make your views known to the Commonwealth Government and the new NSW Planning Minister, the Hon Kristina Kenneally MP.
