Canberra Airport lights up for Enlighten

Over the next ten nights, the Canberra Airport will again light up its roadway for the City’s iconic Enlighten Festival.

From dusk until dawn, the Canberra Airport will glow sky blue thanks to 260 meters of LED linear strip lighting under the elevated roadway. The colourful light was first switched on for the same event back in 2015, with Canberra Airport Manager Aviation Projects, Richard Phillips, commenting at the time on the energy efficiency of using LED technology.

“The concept for illuminating the elevated road structure has always been in our plan. It was originally conceived using a cold cathode system, but with the progress of LED lighting technology we have now installed this very energy efficient system, which accentuates the architecture form of the upper level drop off area.”

The fully programmable system allows for the lights to be programed into a vast array of colours and patterns. Recently it was turned into an illuminated rainbow to say ‘yes’ to marriage equality.

The strip will be lit sky blue for Enlighten, a nod to Canberra’s clear blue autumn sky during what is arguably our city’s most spectacular time of year.

The Enlighten Festival is a hugely popular Canberra event and boasts a spectacular display of architectural projections, international installations and the popular Noodle Festival.

In a festival first, Singapore Airlines, has signed on as presenting partner of Enlighten for the next three years. With Singapore Airlines now operating direct international services between Singapore, Canberra and Wellington, the partnership is expected to promote the festival to a new international audience.
