Canberra Airport celebrates city's #3 in the world ranking

26 October 2017

Canberra Airport is delighted by news the nation’s capital has officially been named one of the top cities in the world to visit.

Lonely Planet’s travel experts named Canberra the third best place to travel to in 2018, behind
Seville in Spain and Detroit in the United States of America.

It is the only city in Australia to make Lonely Planet’s top 10 list for 2018, and the highest ever ranked Australian city in the hotly contested list.

“Canberra Airport connected the city to the world with the arrival of Singapore Airlines flights in late
2016, contributing to a record number of international tourists coming to the ACT in 2017,” Canberra Airport Managing Director Stephen Byron said on Wednesday.

“Now the city is being officially acknowledged as one of the world’s best cities to visit.

“And with Qatar Airways set to begin a daily service to Canberra in February 2018, we look forward to welcoming many more tourists from the Middle East and 23 European destinations.”

In September 2017 the low-cost carrier, Tigerair, commenced a service between Brisbane and Canberra, heralding faster and cheaper access to both cities for tourists, budget and leisure travellers.

The service followed the success of the airline launching return flights between Canberra and
Melbourne in late 2016.
